Some Quick Updates: Comment Leaderboard, CommentLuv, Polls, Future Plans & More

Hey guys, I just wanted to write quick post talking about some of the changes I’ve made around Life Notion recently. I also want to discuss some of the things I want to do with this blog, and of course get your opinion on the blog itself.

Wasting no time, let’s talk business ;-):

1. You Deserve A Reward

I’ve decide that I want to start rewarding the people who take the time to leave a comment on Life Notion a little better. I will almost always visit your website if you leave a link to it in the comments, but I felt like I could start doing more.

I really feel like you guys do a great job writing high quality comments and sparking great conversations. It means a lot that you read my posts in the first place — but commenting on them means even more.

So, I’ve done 2 cool things for you:

1. Comment Leaderboard

Life Notion's Comment LeaderboardThe comment leaderboard is simple: The more comments you write onto Life Notion, the higher the rank you will be in this beautiful widget.

The leaderboard is located in the sidebar, in a fairly noticeable place on the site. It will display your name and your website — so long as you fill in the URL field when you go to leave a comment.

This will appear on nearly every page of Life Notion and will be sure to get you some great link juice for your blog as they are all DoFollow links!

As you can see, the higher you rank — the more noticeable your link becomes. Best start ranking! The leaderboard resets at the end of every month! ;-)

2. CommentLuv

I’m sure you are aware of what CommentLuv does. After your comment, it will automatically grab your latest blog post and link to it at the end of your comment here. It’s awesome, and allows you to share your great writing with the rest of the community here.

Just Remember…

All of this stuff is great, but I don’t want to see it abused! Try to avoid throwing keywords into your username, and don’t spam. I doubt we’ll have to worry about this seeing as everyone who comments already leaves great stuff, I just want new readers to be aware!

2. The Votes Are In: And You Like Life Notion!

Each month, I am going to ask you a new question in the poll. All you have to do to answer, is click the answer you support the most and press “Vote!” You can see what other people chose (anonymously) after you vote.

Since Life Notion is new, I decided to ask you guys what you thought of this site. I feel like it got a great response, and it turns out that you guys love Life Notion!

Life Notion Poll Results

A big thanks to everyone who voted in that poll, and be sure to vote in the new poll in the sidebar now!

3. Plans for the Future

The community here is really shaping up, and I’m doing my best to get new faces around here to take part in the comments and other things.

Now that we have a little something going, I want to start putting into some action some new ideas I have that I think will add even more value to Life Notion.

I won’t say much now…but I can tell you that if you decided to signup to the newsletter, you’ll start to see some of the things I’m talking about sitting comfily in your inbox shortly. ;-)

4. Have You Seen These Things?

Real quick, I just want to share a few links with some cool stuff I think you should check out. They are valuable articles, and a pretty cool feature from Life Notion you may not have seen.

  • The Life Notion Bookshelf
I want to make reading a big theme around here, since I love to read and personally believe that reading is an important part of becoming a smarter and more developed person. So, I compiled a list of some of the books I’ve been reading lately, and challenge you to find something you like from my bookshelf and consider reading it for yourself.
  • Writing Daily for a Better Your
I wrote a guest post on Justin Mazza’s blog, Mazzastick about the value of writing everyday. It’s a pretty interesting read, and one that I think will open your eyes to trying something new.
  • The #1 Easily Fixed Flaw in Your Workflow That is Holding You Back
Another guest post on Life Optimizer, I write about the one thing that holds you back from getting even more work done, and how to combat it.
  • Look at This When You Need Help Solving a Problem
This is a post on Life Notion I wrote a while back, and wanted to make sure you saw. I feel like it is one of the most important posts I’ve published here, and I’d like you to take a quick glance at it right now.

How Has Your Experience Here Been?

That about wraps up this post, and now I want to turn it over to you: what do you think of Life Notion so far? Has the content here helped you at all in your own life? What kind of stuff would you like me to write about more? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Loving your blog Alex! You will really appreciate CommentLuv – it’s a great feature for your readers. I just upgraded to the Premium version, and it’s even BETTER! It includes several plugins that you are probably already using (or should be), and it allows commenters to leave their Twitter ID. You should check it out!

Thanks Ruth! About to stop over at your blog. :-D

I think people are going to enjoy the new comment features. CommentLuv is definitely awesome as-is, and I may have to look into premium now!

Thanks for stopping by!

Of course it takes a designer to finally nail the “Top Commentors” widget the right way… I’ve never been a fan of them due to how they typically look, but you aced this one, it looks great and I love the gradient effect from top to bottom.

Glad to see you guest posting my dude, I can see you having a big effect writing quality like the one you mentioned above. I’d definitely aim for some blogs like ZenHabits to kickstart the LifeNotion userbase.

I’m with you man. I’ve always thought it was a great feature, but I’ve never seen them done right. Sure, listing the names gets the point across, but it adds no level of excitement to it. And that’s what I wanted to fix, and hopefully people have a lot of fun with it!

And yes, you really got me inspired to start guest posting around man! It’s working out, and I have a couple of other ones scheduled at blogs. I may have to try and tackle Zen Habits now, see if I can nail it. :-p

Love the leaderboard. There’s an emotional attachment to it. And I still love the comment fields.

Exactly what I wanted to accomplish with that! Thanks for stopping by man :-D

And I know, the comments field just makes commenting more epic.

I had to stop by! :) #dowork

Hi Alex,

Nice updates. Actually, I love the top commentators leader-board design. It looks fantastic.

Keep up the rocking work, bro.

Alex Mangini December 8, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Thanks man! Spent a good hour perfecting that design. I think it turned out great!

Thanks for the comment. :-D

Outstanding. I’m loving that leaderboard and it’s not because I can see my shiny dome on it. It really is a great idea and shows that you care about your audience.

Comments on blog posts are a special thing, if you ask me. I spent a couple of years running vBulletin forums and I understand the value of interaction on community websites. I’ve recently let go of all my forums, though, so I could concentrate on writing. So, I have nothing but blogs left.

Let me tell you, comments make me grin from ear to ear. In the early stages, they are so rare that you can’t help but get excited. So it’s nice to see you rewarding those who take the time to comment on your blog.

I need to go and read your post about writing daily. I have been writing everyday lately and I feel like it works wonders for my confidence and productivity. I’m interested in seeing your take on it.

This blog is outstanding, man. We’re all looking forward to the future plans.

I feel like rewarding people who take time to comment is huge. People (like you) really put a ton of effort into writing great comments here, so it was the least I could do for you guys.

Hah man, I remember my forum days. They were fun, but have nothing on blogging. I’d like to get my own forum set up again one day in my other business (right now I just have en exclusive support forum). One thing at a time. :-D

I spent a lot of time writing that guest post on Mazza Stick! There’s some good stuff in there man, you’ll like it!

I’m excited too, I love working on this blog and have some amazing ideas for the future. See you around man.

Kian December 8, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Ah man, I’m only third! I better leave more spam comments!

You’re doing great stuff on your blog and as I said before I loved the last post you did, it seems to be getting better and better. And congrats on another post on Life Optimizer. Life optimizer rejected me a while back. I haven’t made it on yet.

Hah dude, you’re slacking at #2 now. :-D

That’s what I like to hear man, glad you support me in all my posts.

Really? That’s a shame…what was the reason for denying? I personally like your posts.

Kian December 8, 2011 at 5:31 pm

The reason wasn’t really given, the webmaster for Life Optimizer just said he gets a lot of submissions and needs to keep the quality high…. fair enough I guess.

Hey Alex, the Leader board is an awesome touch and of course aesthetically it looks great. You’re always coming up with great design changes to enhance our experience as readers. I also agree with Derek Jensen regarding the emotional attachment to the Leaderboard. Again…great job.

Alex Mangini December 8, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Thanks Ray! I wanted to actually make this space valuable, since most people just throw it in their sidebar as a boring list. I hope this leaderboard excites people. I can’t stop staring at it, in all honesty. :-D

Thanks for stopping by man!

Deeone December 8, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Awesomeness! :D

You’ve got a great thing going here at Life Notion, Alex. I would say don’t change a thing, unless you’re moving forward, my man. Love the Leaderboard, and I think down there in the cloud there… that’s me. hahaha Not to worry, I’m coming for you Sean Davis! :D (All in fun, of course.)

Of course I want to be in the know, no doubt… so yep, signed up for the newsletter. Since I’m just starting this portion of my blog myself; it’ll be interesting to see how the masters do it. ;)

I haven’t known anything but Life notion as it currently is, so I have nothing to go by; I do however love what I see here. Great community, awesome content, and a very personable author; everything that makes for a successful website in my opinion.

I also am on my way to see what you had to write on another good friend’s blog, Mazzastick. Justin is a cool cat, I don’t know how I missed your post… if I missed your post; I’m heading over to go check it out though.

Chat with you soon, Alex. Stay cool brother. :)

I think you’re going to take the record for quickest blowing-up blog I’ve ever seen. You totally deserve it though – LifeNotion is awesome and I’m inspired by it every time I come by, both by the content and the design (you were most definitely my inspiration for my email subscription box at the bottom of my posts).

Hah, that’d be sweet! I want everyone to find this place, so I’m doing my best to blow it up for sure. :-D Love all the people who come by already, it’s great to have supporters.

Glad this place inspired you. It inspires me too, I can’t wait to write new posts for it and for the first time since I’ve ever been giving advice out through a blog: I actually follow my own stuff. This place is definitely like no other site I’ve ever started, and I want it to be as successful as possible.

Appreciate the comments man. Just stopped by CollegeInfogeek and man, has it changed so much from when we first met haha. I flatout love the design and think you did an awesome job with your email forms! Big improvement bro, mad props to you.

Adrienne December 8, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Hey Alex,

Well, now that we are connected in another way you can believe I’ll be a regular visitor to your blog now. I happen to really like the look of it. For me personally I prefer a blog theme that is easy on the eyes and simple to navigate in. Yours does all of that so kudos for that.

I agree with Ruth, upgrading to the CommentLuv Premium version will really benefit your blog in so many ways and I have a few posts over at my place that will explain why. I was lucky enough to get in on the beta testing so Andy has really taken this to new heights.

I love the top commenters widget myself. People like to see their names and/or faces up there and the recognition is nice. I see that Deeone and Fred are regular visitors so I know a few more of your readers.

Enjoyed your guest post over at Justin’s blog so will have to take the time to check out the other two I missed.

Looking forward to seeing what else you’ll be sharing so I guess I’ll be back!

Have a great day Alex!

Hi Alex,

looks like a great blog to be reading on a regular basis. I love the way how you create incentives for your readers to leave quality comments – a comment leaderboard and CommentLuv are great tools to do so. I second you on your anri-spam policy. The problem is: Honest readers don’t do it anyway and spammers don’t care. So happy deleting ;-)

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Be blessed

Thanks for stopping by the blog, appreciate the comments!

Love the blog, and polls are a great idea. Polls are a great thing to gauge the true lifeblood of a community, the problem is most are slanted and you aren’t getting the true facts. Social Media is an awesome living poll, if you know how to find the right data.

Great blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog jump out. Please let me know where you got your theme. Many thanks

My partner and I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all of your post’s to be just what I’m looking for. Does one offer guest writers to write content to suit your needs? I wouldn’t mind writing a post or elaborating on a lot of the subjects you write about here. Again, awesome weblog!

Sue June 7, 2013 at 10:41 am

Hi Alex! This is really a great idea. Only shows how you value your followers. Would be glad to be enlisted in your comment leader board. Keep the brilliant polls coming! :)
